When Youngsters and the Young-at-Heart travel…
Adolescents everywhere love travelling around the world individually. As family-travel increased over the last decades, they are well acquainted to visiting far-away places. But what do they do, when they’re out on their own on a small budget? It is surprising how creative young people get with their planning as they need to manage to find budget-friendly ways between destinations and accommodation. True millennials largely map their journey online. However, their decisions are largely based on recommendations of friends and family: by 55% in the US and 53% in Australia.
Leading young travellers are the Spanish (99%), followed by Germans and Brits (both 97%) and the Chinese (93%). While many young Germans prefer individual travel to mass tourism now, they do see their future travels in 10 years, more traditional, as in cultural experiences and gourmet trips. Other nationalities have a different view: for example, 41% of Americans and 40% of Australians want to visit the must-see places around the world. An interesting note: 8% of young Australians, Poles, Brits and Americans believe that, in the future, travelling will no longer be necessary due to the advances in virtual reality.

Now more than ever, there is plenty of accommodation to choose from, in various types and forms, catering to every budget. Youths on extended, individual travels usually prefer clean, centrally located and cheap accommodation. Even traditional hotels are heavily investing in the low-budget segment and offer a unique, hip design to attract these travellers. Furthermore there are camping grounds, hostels, youth hostels and even private accommodation to choose from.
Letting Beds the easy way
In a traditional hotel, rooms are categorised, rates and sales periods are defined respectively and the rooms are sold according to availability to a certain number of guests at a suitable price.
But how do you sell a single bed in a dorm? This a problem for many hostels, youth hostels, holiday homes, mountain huts, etc. There are unique requirements when selling the beds in a room for different periods of time, some with gender restrictions, some mixed. Add an online booking option, which is a must, of course, and you are in definite need of a specialised software that is able to handle it all. That’s why we’ve developed SIHOT.Beds – an integrated solution that can be perfectly combined with our online reservation platform SIHOT.Web.
Youth hostels in particular have diversified their target markets and cater for many different types of guests. For online bookings, this must be taken into consideration from the start to be able to provide different rates and packages to different markets, i.e. each potential guest is presented with a suitable offer:
School or class trip / family holiday / sports or cultural activity / conference or event / special occasion
- Group (age!) – single traveller (FIT) – family
- Bed in dorm – private room – single room – family room
- Dorm: mixed or gender specific, age
- Meal plan
As soon as dorms are being reserved, SIHOT.Beds comes into play. The module ensures that the reservation is ideally spread over the available rooms and beds. Groups that require separate rooms for girls and boys, are allocated suitable rooms with one click.
The room rack shows each room with its individual beds, providing a complete overview of the property’s availability.
Bei Gruppenreservierungen kann bei Anreise ein schneller und unkomplizierter Check-in vorgenommen werden. Für die detaillierte Übersicht der Bettenbelegung stehen aussagekräftige Reports und Statistiken zur Verfügung.
What are we selling? – Real Time Availability of Rooms and Beds
A number of chapters of the German Youth Hostel Association have been using SIHOT.Beds for years. Having drastically improved their facilities to modern, well-run properties they attract many different markets, from schools and groups to backpackers, families and even business travellers. In SIHOT, they found a PMS that could accommodate their special software requirements.
Carsten Groeger is responsible for managing the IT in 45 properties in one of the largest chapters. He says: “Together with GUBSE, we have developed an IT environment that is ideal for our business. Today, we’re working on a centrally hosted solution, all properties access the same database and we get high guest satisfaction.”
The youth hostels are working with the following modules of the SIHOT Product Suite:
- SIHOT.PMS and SIHOT.CRM
- SIHOT.MPE – Multi Property
- SIHOT.Voucher – Gift vouchers and saving coupons
- SIHOT.C&B – in properties with meeting facilities
Early on, the chapter also started using SIHOT.Web for online bookings – and was a key-client to push the development of the module over the years. The latest feature of SIHOT.Web, “My Bookings”, was also instigated by the chapter. However, the main feature of the youth hostels’ online booking platform remain targeted offers for different markets. Direct bookings make for 70% of all bookings and 78.8 % of those are made online on their own SIHOT.Web booking platform. That amounts to 150 – 200 online bookings entering the central booking system per day.
Overall, Carsten Groeger is very happy with the services proved by GUBSE. “We’ve made the right decision. In GUBSE, we’ve found a partner that helps us to grow and expand. We meet every year to discuss the outlook and future projects. The installation and support teams are knowledgeable and familiar with the way we work. Our youth hostels use the direct first level support for SIHOT and I’m also involved with the more difficult cases.”
